Popularity causes a backlash against wine-based tourism

From Oregon, an interesting article on differing public and governmental perceptions of the proper role of publicly-accessible wineries within historically important farming areas. Of particular note is the article’s discussion of the failure of the wineries themselves to reach a consensus on a judicious approach to the issue.

The Willamette Valley’s popularity for wine tourism, however, has created a complicated backlash. The expanding array of activities in wine country has some concerned that farmland is being transformed into special events centers.

“What we have to do is figure out where to draw the line,” said Jim Bernau, founder of Willamette Valley Vineyards near Turner.
